The Noble prized was introduced by Sir Alfred Noble, renowned Swedish scientist who invented dynamite. According to the will of Sir Alfred Noble, “it’s to be awarded to whoever shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.But during the past decade the Noble Committee has so far stretched the definition which was given by Sir Alfred Noble. Now they have added lot more criteria in it including human rights, climate activism, micro financing and most latest addition is social sites and websites.
This time an anti-secrecy website Wikileaks got nominated for Noble Peace Prize and it created history instantly with this nomination. This obviously raised questions and controversies all over the globe.But why and how come WikiLeaks got nominated for the Noble Prize? Questions are raised in which category it comes. The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepted this nomination.
According to Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen, WikiLeaks is one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency in the 21st century. Valen further added that by disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, WikiLeaks is a natural contender for the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to Noble watchers a nominations or aprize for WikiLeaks will highlight the growing role of specialist internet sites and other social media in bringing about world change. Members of all national parliaments, professors of law or political science and previous winners were among the committee members who made nominations. However, the committee refused to comment on the WikiLeaks proposal or any other nominations.
The reaction was quiet negative in the US. Washington is furious and dead against this site WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange. The reason is this anti secrecy webs site had released more than ten thousands of top secret documents and diplomatic cables. US claimed that it has been caused serious harm to the country which cannot be made up anyway. Wikileaks made this harm to US interests abroad, including peace efforts.
The PRIO peace think tank in Oslo, Kristian Berg Harpviken agreed that innovative use of new tools for bringing about peace might prove to be a major theme in this year’s Nobel, but he said he expected the prize to go to a woman after a series of male recipients.
According to social workers and peace makers and elites of the society awarding WikiLeaks the Noble prize would be definitely provoking criticism of the Nobel Committee. This committee is already into centre of criticism because its two most recent choices, jailed Chinese pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo and U.S. President Barack Obama after he got elected.
